Room 4 Us?
I've never been to Bergdorf Goodman, the fancy Manhattan department store, much less its Room 4. You've probably never been to Room 4, either. It's the dressing room in Bergdorf's personal shopping department, where the rich or famous are pampered with champagne or food as they check out really nice clothes and stuff, selected exclusively for their consideration.
I only know about Room 4 because Alan Feuer of the New York Times wrote about it, and I assume he wrote about it because Bergdorf invited him in. Alan describes Room 4 as "peach-walled" and tricked out with wi-fi, zebra-patterned ottomans, three-way lighted mirrors and generally flattering atmospherics. He also quotes Todd Okerstrom, whom he describes as "Bergdorf's immaculately clad director of personal shopping."
Todd says, "Everything is possible here," but suggests the experience is more about convenience than luxury. "The time factor is enormously important," he explains. Alan wonders if it's "a blind spot of the boutique trade to create false divisions among the comfortable, the rich and the extremely rich" like this. I wonder if it's a blind spot in retail to create those divisions between those folks and everybody else. Is there Room 4 the rest of us? What do you think?

Surprised you've never been into Bergdorf. You need to go. If you've been in a walmart, then you need to visit BG. Be sure to take the escalators, you'll know why when you do.
But if you get there too late, the most important part of BG are the windows. Among the best window dressing anywhere. Since it is on 5th, it makes perfect sense.
At holiday they have the best tree ornament assortment anywhere. Select an ornament, have it boxed and gift wrapped. Impress your friends.
Room 4
Of course there is no room for the rest of us. This kind of treatment is only possible if the sales can cover the cost the champagne and of the Todd Okerstroms of the world. However, a watered-down version of this is possible. I took my friend wig shopping when her hair started falling out due to meds. They had a private room for us to sit in with lots of mirrors and she was told to "play" with what ever styles she wanted to. When she needed the help of a pro to get the silly thing on right, the pro was no more than ten feet away. She bought two wigs.

Room 4
For years, regular stores like Macy's, and Nordstroms have had personal shoppers... for regular people (not the rich and famous). This is a wonderful store perk as it is free to the customer.
Sure, they hope that you will end up spending money - after all, the consultant will interview you about what you are looking for, then before you show up, they pull together several outfits in your size ( along with accessories). You try them on, they run around getting the correct sizes, and help you figure out what works best. It saves a lot of time for the customer - no more picking through the racks -- , and you have a dedicated sales person helping you. I have used these services and they are wonderful (only problem is I end up spending more than I had planned - those accessories pull the outfit together, and left to my own skills, I would have not added them).
